Research #1 - It is believed that Joseph's father came to the U.S. 2/15/1888 on the ship Massilia from Marseilles and Naples. Although the name appeared to be spelled "Mandati" on the ship manifest, the fact that Joseph and Antoinette named their first son "Ferdinand" would fit with Italian tradition.
