Gustavus Debrille Pope, the first son of Dr. Benjamin Franklin (1843-1902) and Sarah Lee Poston Pope (1849-1902), was born on June 4, 1873, at Humbolt, Tenn. He was a founder, president, 1914-17, and director, 1904-50, of what is now Difco Laboratories in Detroit. He organized the Detroit chapter of the American Red Cross (chairman, 1917-41), and the Detroit Community Fund (president, 1919-26). He was commissioner of the Detroit Department of Health, 1917-39, member of the Wayne County Board of Supervisors, 1921, 1925-29, vice-president and trustee of the Cranbrook Institute of Science, 1932-52, and a founder and president of the Detroit Society of Arts & Crafts. He married (1) in 1904, Mary Theresa Soper (1872-1940), daughter of Arthur William (1838-1901) and Hettie Mann Wordwall Soper (1849-1916), of Rome, N.Y. She was a founder of The Liggett School and the Women's City Club of Detroit (president). Their children were Dr. John Alexander (1906-82), Elizabeth Lee (1909-62), and Dr. Gustavus Debrille Pope Jr. (1911-2002).
