About Hōri Kingi Tūpaea
"Hōri Kingi Tūpaea was the last chief of Ōtūmoetai Pā in Tauranga. His iwi were Ngāi Te Rangi, his hapū Te Whānau-a-Tauwhao. Hōri fought many battles during the Musket Wars (1818-1842), a major one being in 1831 when he joined forces with visiting chief Te Waharoa and they destroyed Haramiti’s hostile expedition to Mōtītī Island. In 1853 Hōri was invited to become the first Māori King, but declined the offer."
