Haim Nissim Amzalak, Of Yafo

Haim Nissim Amzlag or Amzlak, (1828-1916) Born in Jerusalem and moved to Jaffa in ca 1850. He was a businessman and leader of the Jewish community in Israel. He served as vice consul in Jaffa and head of the UK branch of "Alliance - כי"ח). During the capitulation days he had an important role in protecting the Jewish residents of the city, although they were not British subjects. He took an active part in acquiring land to establish early settlements: in 1878 Petah Tikva and Rishon Le Zion in 1882 and was a founding member of Neve Tzedek neighborhood (later becoming Tel Aviv) in 1887.

Haim Amzalak, Joseph's eldest living son, remained in Jerusalem for several years after his father's death. During those years he often traveled abroad, probably on business. In the late 1850's, upon his first marriage, he finally established himself in Jaffa.

Haim Amzalak was married twice; the first time was to Esther Levi of Hebron. They settled in Jaffa where they had six children: Joseph Ben-Zion (1860), Abraham (1864), Luna-Bolissa (1862), Rosa, Kaleb, and Sultana.

In his later years, Haim had four more daughters by his second wife: Fortuni (1902), Jamila (1900), Rozina (1896), and Rachel (1896). After his brother Solomon's death (1876) Haim also adopted Solomon's son, Ben-Zion, who finally married Haim's daughter, Luna-Bolissa.

Haim Amzalak received consular appointments from two nations, the first from Portugal in 1871, and the second from Great Britain in 1872. While Amzalak's services to the Portuguese government appear to have been rather limited, his activities on behalf of the Britain were of a much greater consequence. The appointment was approved on December 16, 1872, on the recommendation of the British Consul in Jerusalem, Noel Temple Moore. The Jewish community celebrated the appointment and the Habazeleth newspaper wrote:

מנשייה היתה פרבר גדול של יפו, אך לא הומוגני. היו בה רצף של שכונות חצר וגרו בה תושבים מכל רחבי העולם המוסלמי, כמו גם צוענים, איטלקים ויהודים. בצד המערביי של הרחוב הראשי במנשייה (כיום רחוב המרד) היתה שכונת חצר קטנה בשם חצר אמזלק (או בתי אמזלג). במתחם המוקף חומה היו שבעה בניינים ובהם דירות וכן עשר חנויות. שכונה זאת נבנתה בסטנדרד גבוה ביותר, תוך שימוש בחומרים הטובים ביותר. עדות נעמי טיזדייל (נינתו של חיים ניסים אמזלק): "קירות הבניינים בתוך המכלול היו... בנויים אבן מסותתת מבחוץ ומצופה טיח של מלט סיד. האבן היתה אבן חול מיובאת מילדאני, הגג היה טורקי מצופה רעפים של מארסיי. הנגרות היתה עשוייה עץ כתראני...". בית אחד במתחם היה שייך לבן ציון אמזלק. בית אחר לחיים ניסים אמזלק (אליו עבר מביתו שהיה ביפו העתיקה בקרבת חצר היהודים), ושאר הבתים הושכרו ליהודים ומוסלמים. בין הדיירים "המפורסמים" אשר דרו במקום ניתן למנות את משפחות שרתוק (שרת), רוקח, לבונטין וח'לאדי. להבדיל מבתי מנשייה, היו בתי אמזלק מוארים בחשמל שסופק באמצעות גנרטור. מאוחר יותר, בנה חיים ניסים אמזלק את ביתו החדש בנווה צדק (רחוב אמזלג בימינו). מתחם חצר אמזלק ניטש כפי הנראה במהלך הקרבות שהתנהלו במקום בראשית 1948 ובתיו נהרסו כליל..
