About Halvor Warren Hem, Sr.
Halvor Warren Hem Sr. was born on September 25, 1892, to H. O. and Lillian Hem in Kansas City, Missouri (or Kansas.) H.W. Hem followed in his fathers footsteps with his passion for creating scales and mechanical devices. He held over 100 patents by the time he was sixteen years old. ?? (Needs verification...couldn't find them in the US Patent Office in Washington DC.) He also came to the Toledo Scale Company where he became the chief design engineer. While at Toledo Scale, he designed and oversaw the creation of many important scales. H.W. Hem retired from Toledo Scale in 1960 (1963?) after 31 years of service.
H.W. Hem Sr.was married to Madeleine and had four children: H. W. Hem Jr, Catherine Hem English, Clarice Hem Meredith, and Paul Hem. H.W. Hem Sr. passed away on February 3, 1988 at the age of 95.
In one census, (to be determined later), he lived at 1619 Jefferson, in Kansas City, MO, and was listed as a Mechanical Engineer at the Strait Mfg. Co.
In the 1910 Census, at 16 yrs of age, he worked in a machine shop of which his father was general manager, in Kansas city, MO.
In the 1920 census, he lived in Kansas City, Ward 2, Jackson County, MO.
