About Hanna C. Backstrøm

Hanna was born either 1855 or 1858; records conflict. Hanna left for Chicago on May 22, 1873 from the harbor at Oslo, catching the NORSK ship (St. Olaf). She was 15 years old and under "occupation" in the form "emigranter fra Oslo 1867-1930" it states her as "jomfru" which simply means maiden. Apparently her mother Evensine Larsen came to USA after divorcing Gudbrand Larsenand resided with or near Hanna. In 1887 there are city records showing Mrs Evensine B. Larsen living at 804 N. Herkimer in Joilet, IL, and records show that John E. Backstrom lived at same address, same year.

Grandma Gunvor with her parents Karol and Karoline and brother Norman visited Hanna Dec 1902 in Joliet Illinois where Hanna was living and is married to John Backstrøm. Grandpa and her parents lived in Joliet until summer 1903; Great Grandpa Karl worked in an iron mill in Joliet before moving to Montana in 1903.
