Walter Aston married first before 26 Jul 1628 (date of patent) to "Warbowe".
He married second to Hannah,[1][2] whose surname has been given by some as Jordan, but no evidence exists to substantiate this claim. See notes below for more information on the names of his wives.
Walter left a widow, Hannah, who proved his will on 25 January 1656/7 in Charles City County.[1] She married second to Col. Edward Hill, Esq., of Shirley, after 8 January 1660 (date of patent).[1] Edward died about 1663 and Hannah was still living in 1666, when she was named a legatee in the will of her son Walter Aston, the younger,[2] which was dated 21 December 1666.[1]
From Walter's two marriages, he had two sons and three daughters:
- Walter,[1] who sold some of his inheritance to his mother, after her remarriage.[2] He was born about 1639 and died 29 January 1666/7, apparently unmarried.[2][3]
- Thomas,[1] living 1644, when he was mentioned as a god-child in the will of Capt. Thomas Pawlett.[5][6] Thomas probably died without issue.[3]
- Susan (or Susannah), wife of Lieut. Col. Edward Major[2] and William Batte, Esq.[1] Her will was dated 1662 in Nansemond.[3]
- Mary, wife of Lieut. Col. Richard Cocke[2][3] and Lieut. Col. Daniel Clarke[1]
- Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Binns[2][3] and Col. Francis Mason[1]
Notes
Walter Aston’s first wife was named “Warbowe” and she, as shown by the above patents, came over with him. He married, secondly, Hannah “Jordan” (Major’s, p 27) who after his death married Col. Edward Hill.
Hannah (unknown) Aston Hill is often reported as having died April 6 1656, however, this is incorrect. Her hussband Walter Aston died 4/6/1656 and Hannah is known to have survived him. Had she died April 6 1656 as well then there would have been no possibility of her marrying Edward Hill.
The 21 December 1666 will of Walter Aston (the younger), names Hannah Hill as his mother.[1][2] Assuming this is literally correct (i.e. he isn't calling his stepmother his "mother"), we can infer that she was also the mother of Thomas and (at least) any younger sisters (and possibly of all Walter (the elder's) children).
Walter Aston died in 1656 with four children: Susan, Elizabeth, Waler, and Mary. ... Hannah was Walter's second wife, his first was (?) Warbowe. In the history of Virginia, Hannah married Col. Hill and took 1500 acres of the Aston plantation (the Hill's were 'next door neighbors' to the Aston's)to that family (doubling its size). The Aston/Hill plantations were located in Shirley where the Charles river takes a wide sweep.Across from the Shirley Plantation is Ashton Creek, named for Walter Aston (allowing for late misspellings).
Disputed Origins
“There's no evidence that she was a Jordan. That comes only from Majors and their Marriages. There's a suspicion that Cabell might have confused her with a different Mrs Hannah Hill (though actually she wasn't a Jordan either).”
