Biography
Hannah was born in 1646 at Marshfield in the Plymouth Colony. She was the daughter of Edward Bompasse, Bumpas, Bumpus, Bump and Hannah Unknown.[1]
On June 10, 1662, 16 year old Hannah was "sentanced to bee publickly whipt, which accordingly was pformed." Her crime was "for yielding to him [Thomas Bird, a married man] and not makeing such resistance against him as shee ought." He was also sentenced to be whipped and to pay her ten pounds.[2]
Hannah's name continues to appear in civic records; at a Marshfield town meeting in 1666, they agreed to provide clothing and shoes and "disposed of her with her father's consent to Richard Sproat for to be his servant for three years." After living at Hingham "and their's to maintain" for some period of time, "distracted person" Hannah was returned to Marshfield by John Farrow and William Sprague Sr.; they were fined five pounds.[3]
