About Hannah Harrison

HISTORY

"...Hannah married Captain Nathaniel Harrison, son of Thomas Harrison and his wife Dorothy, the widow Thompson, and grandson of Richard Harrison, one of the original settlers of Branford. The Harrisons came originally from Virginia Colony and were connected with the family whose stately home, Berkely, still stands on the banks of the James River, and which produced presidents Benjamin and William Henry Harrison.

Early in the 1960's I corresponded with Donald Lines Jocobus the Connecticut historian who knew more about the early families than any man living, and was himself a distant descendent of Edward Frisbie. Jocobus told me that he found an entry in the Connecticut records indicating that Hannah and Nathaniel ware called before the local court to answer a charge of "fornication before marriage" and were fined for it, but he did not give me the date of the incident, and I have not found any reference to it in my own research. He said, however, that at that time such peccadillo was not considered anything more serious than a minor misdemeanor; it ranked with a parking fine in our own day.

Nathaniel built a fine new home for his bride; known as the "Nathaniel Harrison House"; it stood on West Main Street in Branford until it was torn down in 1951.

In May 1706 Nathaniel was appointed captain of the Branford train band, the local militia company which met regularly in the village for training and practice and could be called out in case of emergency.

Hannah and Nathaniel had 11 children the 2 youngest of whom were twins. Hannah died in 1723 and her husband in 1728..."
