  • FIRST GENERATION.
  • 1 JOHN LEA,1 the founder of the family in America whose genealogy is given in the following pages, was of Christian Malford, Wiltshire, England. He is No. XXV (THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ERROR IN THE BOOK, AS JOHN LEA IS NO. LXIV; NO. XXV IS FOR THOMAS LEA, SON OF BALDWYN AND JOANE(VENNERSTONE) LEA.) in the Pedigree given in the English Section of this work, where an account of his forebears will he found. He was the son of John and Joane ( . . . . . ) Lea, born about 1661 and baptized at Christian Malford on the 12 July 1674.
  • So far as has been ascertained . . . . Little is known of his personal history except that he was a wool stapler and, probably for that reason, removed to Gloucestershire (the chief centre of that industry being then about the Cotswold Hills) prior to the time of his f marriage, which took place at the Gloucester Monthly Meeting in England 1st of 12 mo. (called February) 1698, his wife being Hannah the daughter of++ Samuel and Mary (Whitcombe) Hopton (b. about 1665) and widow of§ Joseph Webb of Gloucester.

  • John Lea died at Springfield 10 mo (December) 27th 1726. His decease is alluded to by his old friend and fellow Preacher, Thomas Chalkley, as follows: . . .

  • His f will dated 10 mo 25th 1726 and proved Feb. 28th 1726/7 gives bequests to his wife Hannah and children Isaac, John and Hannah Bonsall. Executors son Isaac Lea and friends Samuel and William Levis.
  • Hannah Lea his widow after his death removed to Darby, Pa., where she resided with her son-in-law Joseph Bonsall and where she died September 24th 1735. Her Will, dated 9 mo 16th 1734, was proved Oct. 17th 1735.++ Legacies to sons Isaac and John Lea, and daughter Hannah Bonsall, daughters Hannah Allen and Mary Pilkington, grandchildren by son Joseph Webb decd, and Mary his wife, Hannah, Joseph and Sarah Webb, grandchildren by Edward Pilkington and daughter Mary, Thomas, Mary, Hannah, Sarah Ann and Edward. Executors son-in-law Joseph Bonsall and son John Lea.

Pa. 7 May 1752, Mary, dau. of John and Abigail ( . . . . . ) Yarnall and wid. of Thomas Pennell. He d. Chester, Pa. 8 Apr. 1759. His Will, dated 12 Apr. 1759, was proved 1 May of the same year. His widow, who is named as sole Executrix, remarried 1763 to Jonas Preston, by whom she had issue Jonas Preston M.D., founder of the Preston Retreat in Philadelphia.

***' 21 HANNAH LEA3 (John,2 John1) dau. of John and Mary (Yarnall) Lea, b. Chester, Pa. 31 Mch. 1753 (N. S.) m. Wilmington, Del. 22 Oct. 1772, Joseph, son of Thomas and Sarah (Preston) Canby of Kent Co. Md. She received a Certificate from Wilmington to Cecil Monthly Meeting 16 Dec. 1772. Their residence was at the head of the Sassafras River in Cecil Co. Md. where one or two children were born to them, who died in infancy and no record of their names has been preserved. After the death of Joshua Canby she m. 2nd at Cecil Meeting 6 Nov. 1782 Joshua (Jr.) son of Joshua and Mary (Lewis) Pusev of Londongrove. Pa. (b. Londongrove 19 Nov. 1738 O. S., d. there 16 Mch. 1804) as his third wife. She received a Certificate from Wilmington to Center, Del. 4 Mch. 1814, but although connected with that Meeting she resided with her son Jacob Pusey at Auburn Mills, Hockessin, Del. where she d. 23 Aug. 1810.
