About John Lea, III

  • THE ANCESTRY OF JOHN LEA OF CHRISTIAN MALFORD, WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND.
  • The pedigree which follows has been constructed with all possible care from the evidences in hand, and every precaution taken to avoid making any statement not actually borne out by the evidences.
  • It will be understood of course that the first three generations as given are tentative merely, but the author's belief in the extreme probability of these named as representing the true descent must be his excuse for placing them here. Future investigations may confirm or disprove these three generations.

    • FOUR PROVED GENERATIONS.
  • Children of GEORGE and SARAH (WELDEN) LEA.
  • LII JOHN LEA6 (George,5 Baldwyn,4 Baldwyne,3 John,2 John1) son of George and Sarah (Welden) Lea, was of Christian Malford, married before 1654 to Joane . . . . . * She was witness to the will of Eleanor Gingle, 1 Oct. 1660. The date of her death is unknown. He was buried 7 Mch. 1685 at Christian Malford.
  • * From the appearance of two entirely new names to the family in the two younger children of John and Joan Lea, it is not unreasonable to suppose that the Christian names of Joan's parents were respectively Daniel and Lucy — which may some day prove a clue to the family name. This is the only family name of a wife in the direct line for more than three hundred years which is unknown, and special, though fruitless, efforts have been made to discover it.

    • LXIV JOHN LEA7 (John,6 George,5 Baldwin,4 Baldwyn,3 John,2 John1) son of John and Joane ( . . . . . ) Lea, probably born about 1661-2, but not bapt. until 12 July 1674. The AMERICAN EMIGRANT, he was a woolstapler, removed to Gloucester, became a Quaker. He married 1 Feb. 1697-8 at Gloucester Friends' Meeting, Hannah, widow of Joseph Webb of Ashleworth, Glouc, and daughter of Samuel and Mary (Whitcombe) Hopton of Painswick, Glouc. He had a son Isaac Lea, born at Gloucester 15 Jan. 1698-9, received certificate from Nailsworth Quarterly Meeting 27 Aug., no year given, but it seems probable that it was 1699, and that he accompanied William Penn on his second voyage, in the ship "Canterbury" sailing from Cowes in the Isle of Wight 9 Sept. 1699 and arriving in Pennsylvania 1 December. — See American Section.

    • 1 JOHN LEA,1 the founder of the family in America whose genealogy is given in the following pages, was of Christian Malford, Wiltshire, England. He is No. XXV (THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ERROR IN THE BOOK, AS JOHN LEA IS NO. LXIV; NO. He was the son of John and Joane ( . . . . . ) Lea, born about 1661 and baptized at Christian Malford on the 12 July 1674.
    • So far as has been ascertained . . . . Little is known of his personal history except that he was a wool stapler and, probably for that reason, removed to Gloucestershire (the chief centre of that industry being then about the Cotswold Hills) prior to the time of his f marriage, which took place at the Gloucester Monthly Meeting in England 1st of 12 mo. (called February) 1698, his wife being Hannah the daughter of++ Samuel and Mary (Whitcombe) Hopton (b. about 1665) and widow of§ Joseph Webb of Gloucester.
