About Hans Anton Jacobsen
On 5 April 1892, he departed as mate on board the barque, Jean Bart, bound for Holland, returning the following October and signing off at Christiania. For the next two years he skippered Jean Bart for destinations that included England.
However, his final voyage on board this barque ended in tragedy when he failed to return home in the northern summer of 1896. His final trip commenced when he signed on as skipper on 16 April at Drøbak on the eastern shore of the Inner Oslofjord. Alette Marie, with her two young children, received the news that Hans Anton had disappeared on 21 August while en route from Arkhangelsk to Scotland.
No trace was found of Jean Bart or its cargo and a promising seafaring career was terminated at the tender age of 28. Gone but not forgotten, Hans Anton is commemorated at the Hvaler Church cemetery where a memorial has been erected and dedicated to men whose last resting place is the sea.
Before the sale of Stenrud in September 1899, Alette signalled her intention of leaving Hvaler in October 1898 to start a fresh life in Fredrikstad. She departed with young Olger Harry and Dagny Elisabeth Torine in 1899 and, without delay, married Bernt Ludvig Opsahl in Glemmen Church on 25 January 1900. It appears that her attraction to seamen could not be quenched, for Bernt was also a ship’s captain who commanded many ships out of Fredrikstad. However, fortune shone more brightly on this marriage. It produced four children and both Alette and Bernt led long lives before Alette's death on 3 January 1941 and subsequent burial in the Glemmen Church cemetery. Bernt died seven years later on 1 April 1948 and was buried in the same graveyard.
