About Hans Caspar Spengler

Christening: 20 Jan., 1684 Weiler, Heidelberg, Baden, Germany

Immigration: 1 Sep., 1727 Arrived at the Port of Philadelphia, Pa. aboard the ship "William and Sarah", he had to pay 49 florins 5 kreuzer in emigration tax.

Residence: (1729) York Co., Pennsylvania

Burial: Spengler Cemetery (Family Plot on Homestead Farm) in Heistand Station / Little Codorus Creek

He was a Master and Craftsman of the Linen Weaver's Guild of Weyler. Guilds at that early period were organizations created for mutual protection, for the attainment of some common purpose, or the pursuit of a special object and the advancement of the interest of the fraternity.

(The great authority on the Spangler families of Pennsylvania is Edward W. Spangler, The Annals of the Families of Caspar, Henry, Baltzer and George Spengler, who settled in York County respectively in 1729, 1732, 1732, and 1751: with Biographical and Historical Sketches and Memorabilia of Contemporaneous Local Events (York, Pennsylvania: The York Daily Publishing Co., 1896.) "While the name was originally "Spengler" the common spelling in 1896 was "Spangler" except for one branch in Virginia" (pp.vii-viii). The family came from "Weyler under Steinberg" according to the passport documents brought along on the emigration, and the Reformed pastor of Hilsbach-Weiler constructed a family tree which traced the family from Schoftland, Canton Aargua, Switzerland.

Of the emigrants to Penn., Baltzer was one of, if not the first settler, and one of the ounders of York, Pennsylvania (Gibson, York County, p. 237). The Weiler emigrant families continued to intermarry in America. Caspar Spengler's daughter Mary married Colonel Michael Swope (Schwab), who was Justice of the Peace, Judge, and Member of the State Assembly 1768-1776, and Colonel in the Flying Camp during the Revolution. Henry Spengler, who emigrated in 1732, brought along a family Bible that he had purchased at the Frankfurt Fair for 4 florins, and when his first child was born in America in 1732, the sponsors were Rudolph Wilcke (No.20) and wife, both from Weiler.
