About Hans Hendrick, II

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hendrick-247

30 Jan1773 - Last Will & Testament of Hans Hendrick of Raleigh Parish, Amelia County, made this date, probated c1773. Named son John Hendrick, daughter Elizabeth Osborne, daughter Anne Hendrick, daughter Sarah Goode, and son Hans Hendrick. Wife Rachel Hendrick to have life interest in entire estate.

Cash legacies [to Sarah and Hans] to be raised out of estate, with balance remaining to be divided equally "between all my sons and daughters." Executors: Thomas Osborne, Benjamin Hendrick. /s/ Hans "X" Hendrick. Wit: Benjamin Hendrick, Thomas Osborne, Obadiah Hendrick, John Hendrick. (Amelia County, VA, Wills, 2:97) Source: Notes from Descendants at Ancestry.com.

Executor and witness Benjamin Hendrick was Hans' brother whose plantation adjoined Hans in Amelia. Both Hans and Benjamin were the son of Hans Hendrick, Sr., of King William County. John Hendrick was Hans' son, who shared the home plantation with his father. Obadiah Hendrick was apparently an older son of either Hans or Benjamin.

Whether his wife Rachel was his only wife is unknown, as is her maiden name. She is mentioned elsewhere only in the release of dower in the 1754 deeds, well after the elder children were born.23

In a bizarre twist of logic, a good many genealogies identify her as Rachel Ragan who actually married his great-grandson. [An 1893 Alabama biography identifies Rachel Ragan as the wife of Hance Hendrick, son of William Wynne Hendrick, grandson of Hance Hendrick III, and greatgrandson of this Hance Hendrick.24]
