About Hans Michael Horlacher

Immigration: Arrived in Philadelphia, PA 10 Sept 1731 on PA MERCHANT and took the Oath of Allegiance the next day.

HANS (JOHN) MICHAEL HORLACHER was born on February 7, 1706 in Sollebot, Obrtsteinach, Wuttemburg Germany and was baptized the next day. His parents are Hans Georg Horlacher, a farmer in Sollebot, and Eva Barbara _____. He married MARIA FRONICA (VERONICA) SCHMIDT, the daughter of Willam Schmidt, on February 8, 1724 at the Evangelical Reform Chrurch Freinsheim, Weisenheim am Sand, Bayern-Pfalz, Germany. Michael was called "master tailor" at the birth of their son, Johann Jacob, who was born on November 3, 1724 and son Johann Peter who was born on September 23, 1728. Both were baptized at the Evangelical Reform Lutheran Church in Weisenheim am Sand. Jacob died on May 21, 1728 The family sailed from Rotterdam, by way of Dover, on the Pennsylvania Merchant, arriving in Philadelphia on September 10, 1731. Michael was "qualified" the next day. Their son, Johann Peter was not on the ship; he had probably died prior to their departure as they named another son, born in 1742, in his honor. Their daughter, Maria, under 16, was with them as were Fronica's sister Catharina, age 35, her second husband Johann Bartel Gucker and her two sons with first husband _____ Laufer. Michael was warrented 151 acres on August 29, 1734 in Philadelphia County. This land was located partly in Upper Hanover Township, Philadelphia (became Northampton, then Lehigh) County, and partly in New Milford Township in Bucks County. This is the corner where Bucks, Lehigh and Montgomery Counties now come together. Three more children were born between 1731 and 1738--ANNA ELIZABETH perhaps about 1731, Daniel in 1735 and George in 1738. No baptism records have been found for them. The family were members of the St Pauls Evangelical Church, called Six Cornered Church or New Goshenhoppen Lutheran Church, in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County. They were Godparents to two sons of Peter Wetzstein in 1736 and 1739. Their daughter Susanna was born on May 4, 1741 and baptized on May 2, and son Johann Peter was born October 25, 1742 and baptized on November 7. On January 26, 1754 Michael, innholder, and Veronica his wife, of Lower Milford Township, Bucks County bought 318 acres on a branch of Lehigh Creek, by where they already lived. They paid L136-16, plus L250 and interest due on a mortgage. One of the witnesses was Adam Blank. Adam was the father of Christopher who was married to Michael and Veronica's daughter Anna Elizabeth. On October 9, 1766 they sold 134 acres 80 perches of the above land to Daniel Horlacher for L275 and, on the next day, they sold 183 acres 8 perches--the rest of the above land--to Christopher for L225. Michael became a naturalized citizen in the province of Pennsylvania on April 10/11 1761 at a Supreme Court in Philadelphia. The process for becoming a naturalized citizen as required by an act passed by the British parliament in 1742 consisted of: residence seven years; partaking of the sacrament of the Lord's Supper in some protestant or reformed congregation in the province with three months; taking or subscribing to the oaths and making or repeating the declaration prescribed by the act; appearing before the judges of the court and being certified as a citizen of Great Britain. Veronica automatically was naturalized (as chattel of her husband!) It is not known when Michael or Veronica died.

Michael Horlacher, his wife and one child, arrived in Philadelphia 10 September 1731, on the Ship Philadelphia Merchant. According to the ship's list there were 57 Palatines and their families aboard - a total of 175 persons. A study of other emigrants named Horlacher on different ships - some earlier and some later - indicates they came from the area in Germany named Wuerttemberg. A small town has been located there named Horlachen, and it is supposed this town may very well have been the birthplace of the "Horlachers".

...

As far as is known, Michael Horlacher first settled in the Upper Perkiomen Valley of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. St. Pauls Lutheran Church of Red Hill (in the Upper Perkiomen area) has some early records concerning the family, beginning in 1736. Baptisms of two of the Horlacher children were recorded in 1741 and 1742. However, it is believed that at least three other children were born to them between the years of 1731 and 1741. The Horlacher genealogy includes two born in 1735 and 1738. The daughter said to have married Christopher Blank would be the third child born in that period - possibly circa 1732. "Maria", the daughter who accompanied Michael and his wife Veronica on the voyage, may have married Christian Miller. Sponsorings indicating a relationship have been found in Blue Church records (Upper Saucon, Lehigh County) and in St. Pauls of Red Hill.

...

Michael Horlacher, born circa 1700, married Maria Veronica (Frenech on the ship list). She was born circa 1705. They brought one child with them to America. According to Perkioment Region Papers Volume V No. 1 January 1927 Whole #16 Land Patent records - #362 - Upper Hanover warranted 1734 to Michael Horlacher 151 acres. In 1754 he purchased additional acreage in Whitehall Township (Lehigh County) which he later sold in part to Daniel Horlacher, Christopher Blank (son-in-law), and Conrad Marcks. 1754 would have been about the time that the daughter, Anna Elisabeth, married Christopher Blank and moved to Whitehall Township. Dates of death of Michael Horlacher and his wife Veronica are not known, nor was a will probated - at least no record of one has been found. It is believed there were at least six children: MARIA (perhaps Maria Barbara or variation) - born circa 1729 ANNA ELISABETH - born circa 1732 DANIEL - born 4 August 1735 GEORGE - born 6 October 1738 SUSANNA - born 4 May 1741 JOHN PETER - born 25 October 1742 Text: p. 189 Note: 4 One of the most interesting tracts in the township is that warranted by John Aigander in 1734 and 1737, containing 318 acres, along the Jordan creek. Jacob Wertz secured it in 1749 and sold it Sept. 4, 1751 to George Hoffman, who sold it, Jan. 26, 1754, to Michael Harlacher for £250. Harlacher sold 134 acres to Daniel Harlacher, on Oct. 9, 1766 for £275, and 103 acres to his son-in-law, Christopher Blank, on Oct. 10th, for £225. The western portion of the tract was secured by Conrad Marks in 1784, whose descendants still own a portion of it.

Peter Blank, son of Christopher, secured 120 acres of the tract in 1790. In 1799 his son-in-law, John Helfrich, secured the land and the greater part is still owned by his descendants. On this tract is the famous "Indian cave," and numerous large springs, as well as the Helfrich grist-mill, the old school house near the bridge, and the site of an ancient cemetery, where only one tomb stone remains, dated 1775.
