Hans was born in Skjak, Norway in the state of Oppland, a son of Nils Storbraaten and Anne Ivarsdatter Slette. He emigrated from Stavanger on May 18, 1869 landing in Quebec on June 18, 1869. By 1870, he located himself in Vienna Township, Wisconsin and shortly thereafter met and married Anna Nilsdatter Rasmussen - Meland. They then relocated themselves to Lodi, where they lived out the rest of their lives. Hans and Anna 13 children, all born in Lodi. They were: Bertha, Nels, Robert, Anna R., Emma, Hattie, Henry, Mary, Joseph, Ella, Mabel, Arthur, and Juanita.
