Hans Hansen or Jansen (Hans Jansen Van Noordstrandt). Hans was born about 1610 on Norstrand Island, Netherlands, and migrated to New Amsterdam in 1638. He worked as an interpreter and often traveled between Holland and the new settlement. He married Rymerig Volkert, and they had 4 children-Marretje, Hans, Simon, and Elsa. His wife died in 1645, and Hans placed Marritje who was just 9 and her sister Elsa in the home of a farmer Phillip Garretsen where they learned the art of homemaking. Hans died in 1690 in Flatlands, Brooklyn. After Jurian's death Marritje remarried to Jacob Jansen. Marritje died after 1670 in Ulster, Kingston County, New York.

The Annals of Newton by James Riker, Jr. "The family of Norstrand, or Van Norstrand, on Long Island, derive origin from Hans Jansen, who came over in 1640 from Noortstrandt in Holstein, and whose sons adopted the name of the place whence their father emigrated, which time had reduced to the present orthography. Hans. m. in 1652 Janneken Gerrits van Loon, and d. at Flatlands in 1690. His will is recorded both in New York and Brooklyn. He left sons John, Gerrit, Peter, and Folkert, whose descendants, now greatly multiplied, form in point of means and respectability, a valuable part of our population."

Our ancestor Hans JANSEN and his brother Jacob Jansen VAN NORDSTRANDT cameto New Amsterdam about 1638, starting from a sand spit called Noordstrandt near Husum on the west coast of Holstein now in Germany. The brother Jacob Jansen who died in 1686 at Albany, New York had a son Jan Jacobs who livedin Niskayuna NY, dying about 1703 leaving a son Willem Oostrander who lived at Albany. Hans Jansen farmed on Long Island at Amersfoort(now called Flatlands) east of Brooklyn.Hans Jansen van Nordstrand married first Reymerig, probably at Husum, Germany, and secondly Jannetje daughter of Gerrit Van Leeuwen. From the first marriage he had Jan, Sijmon and our ancestor Marritje Hansen. Fromthe second marriage to Jannetje at New Utrecht on Long Island he had 7children. Some became Van Nostrands in New York and others became Hansensin Delaware.Our ancestor Maritje Hansen was bound out to a tavernkeeper and marriedJuriaen Westfall at Kingston NY about 1650. They had six children: Rymerick,Johannes(our ancestor), Nicholas, Abel, Simon and Elsje Westfall, all bornat Kingston NY before Juriaen Westfall died there about 1667. After Juriaen'sdeath, Marritje remarried to Jacob Jansen van Stoutenburg from Amersfoort,Holland.
"Jurian married Marretje Hansen Van Nordstrand (or Van Nostrand) in abt. 1653 or 1654. Marretje was born in about 1636 in Nordstrand, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark (now Germany). Her father was Hans Hansen or Jansen (Hans Hansen Van Nordstrand).
Hans was born Bet. 1600 and 1610 on Nordstrand Island, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark (now Germany), and migrated to New Amsterdam in 1639. Hans was a farmer, and owned a farm in the Flatbush neighborhood located in the borough of Brooklyn in Kings County, Long Island, New York. The community name derives from the Dutch for "level forest" and is presently bounded by Parkside Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, Avenue H and Coney Island Avenue. It includes the southernmost portion of Prospect Park.
Marretje's father Hans Hansen Van Nostrand (or Nordstrand) married 1st Rymerig Volkert, and they had these children-

Hans died in 1690 in Flatlands, (Brooklyn), Kings, Co., NY. After Jurian's death Marritje remarried to Jacob Jansen Stoutenburgh. Marritje died after 1670 in Ulster, Kingston County, New York.
