Germanna Record #1 Patriotic Service in Virginia lists me in 1761 on the roster of Captain William Edmond's Company of Virginia in the French and Indian war. SAR#138355 and DAR#429161. I died in my chair.

Biography

Harmon Hitt, son of Peter Heite and Elizabeth Catharina Otterbach, was born in 1721 in the Germanna Colony in Virginia, and died in 1820 in Fauquier County Virginia.

He married Mary Weaver (1726-1793), daughter of Tillman Weaver, a Nassau-Siegen immigrant.

Harmon and Mary Hitt lived in Fauquier County Virginia in 1770 and 1770. They had at least 8 Children;

  1. John Hitt born (1746-1805),
  2. Elizabeth Hitt (1748-1832),
  3. Judith Hitt (1750-1818),
  4. Moses Hitt (1751-1797),
  5. Joseph Hitt (1753-1754),
  6. Peter Hitt (1753-1754),
  7. Jesse Hitt (1755-1802) and
  8. Mary Ann Hitt (1759-1813).

  • Different sources show that Harmon’s first wife was Mary and/or Ann Weaver.
  • Some sources show these additional children; Sarah Sally Hitt, Samuel Hitt, Martin E. Hitt, Benjamin Hitt and Daniel Hitt.
  • His father Peter Heite, changed his name to the English variation Hitt, during his stay in England before leaving for the Germanna Colony in Virginia. Most of descendants continued to use Hitt.
  • Germanna was in Essex County when it was initially established. Spotsylvania County was established in 1721 from Essex. [According to Wikipedia] “Germanna was the seat of Spotsylvania County from 1720 to 1732. The site of the first settlement is located in present-day Orange County along the banks of the Rapidan River, with subsequent settlements of Germans being established on sites in present-day Culpeper and Spotsylvania counties.”
