Harold was married in 1923 to Effie Adelyn Flagstad of Day County, S.D. She was the daughter of Julius Flagstad (1847-1928), who has an inaccessible Profile on Geni, and Anna Tell.

H.M. Elwell, Civic Figure, Is Dead at 57. Harold M. Elwell, 57, 907 Seventh street SE., president of the former Minneapolis Furniture Co. and southeast civic leader many years, died unexpectedly last night. Mr. Elwell made possible construction of Elwell field, playground at East Hennepin and Ninth street SE., which tract of ground he sold to the park board for considerably less than its value. The field was named after the father, George Herbert Elwell, one of tho organizers of the Minneapolis Furniture Co. and original owner of the playground property. The younger Mr. Elwell was a member of First Congregational church, Zeta PsI fraternity and Minneapolis Automobile club. He attended Minnesota, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania universities. Surviving are the wife, Effie: a son, George Herbert III; a daughter, Cynthia; three sisters, Mrs. J. Reed Jackson, Milwaukee; Mrs. A. R. Compton and Mrs. R. H. Kurtzman, both of Minneapolis, and a brother, George Herbert Elwell II, Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
