Dr. Harold Sloan, 101, N.j. Entrepreneur November 10, 1988|The Morning Call
Dr. Harold Stephenson Sloan, 101, of Lopatcong Township, N.J., died Saturday in the Care Center of Lopatcong. He was the husband of the late Bertha L. (Florey) Sloan.
He began his business career as a clerk in Bennett-Sloan & Co. in New York City, his father's wholesale grocery business.
He was treasurer and general manager of his own contract manufacturing businesses, DeCamp & Sloan Inc., Newark, N.J., and later, Stephenson Laboratories, makers of phonograph and radio equipment in Plainfield, N.J.
He also was vice president of Florey Bros., a grand piano manufacturer in Washington, N.J.
Sloan taught history at the Marquand School, Brooklyn, N.Y., and at New Jersey State Normal School, Newark. He also was an assistant and associate professor of economics at New Jersey State College, Upper Montclair.
He was vice president and executive director of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, 1936-45.
In addition, he was an author and visiting professor at New York University, New York University Graduate School and Columbia Teachers College; director of research at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he was also trustee emeritus; professor of interAmerican studies on education and economic development in Bogota, Columbia, South America, and president of the Institute for Instructional Improvement Inc., which he founded in 1960.
Sloan received his bachelor and masters degrees from Columbia University, doctor of letters from the University of Denver, doctor of science from Fairleigh Dickinson and a doctorate from Centenary College, Hackettstown, N.J.
Survivors: Son, Alvin Florey Sloan, of Washington, N.J., a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.
The DeVoe Funeral Service, 136 W. Washington Ave., Washington, was in charge of arrangements.
