About Harriet Levicy “Hattie” Hardy

William Harris Hardy, the founder of both Hattiesburg and Gulfport. Mississippi married Hattie Lott of Mobile, Alabama, in 1874. She bore him three children before she died in 1895. Hattie was the namesake for the city (Hattiesburg) that Hardy founded in 1882 along the railroad he built from Meridian to New Orleans.

Harriet Levicy Lott Hardy was the daughter of Elisha Bradford and Mary Elizabeth Swain Lott. Her middle name came from her father's stepmother. His stepmother's name was Levicy Williams. Her grandfather was Jessie Lott Sr. (FAG #62932030) and her grandmother was Isabella Denmark. There is some information on her grandparents on their FAG sites.

William Hardy was on business in Mobile, AL. when he met Hattie. They married on Dec. 1, 1873. They had three children Lamar (Laury) b. May 29, 1879, Toney Arnold b. Aug. 6, 1884, and Lena Mai b. Feb. 24, 1888. Lamar married a French girl by the name of Micheline b. abt. 1880 in France. Lamar passed away in New York City on Aug. 18, 1950. He was buried in Greenlawn Cem. His FG #93704069. Toney passed away Oct. 1978 FG #79579887 married Mabel Wisner Ross FG #22368979. Lena Mai married an Emmett B. McDonald and they had one child Elizabeth Hardy McDonald b. abt. 1915 in MS. By 1930 the family was living in Duval Co., FL. Elizabeth married Ralph A. Crawford in 1931 in Duval Co., FL. She had two children Ralph Jr. and Elizabeth. Lena probably passed away in Duval Co, FL. In 1940 they were living in Jacksonville, FL.

The town of Hattiesburg, MS. was named for Hattie by her husband William Hardy. Many of the street names were names after family members.
