About Harriet Hodges Huggett

El Paso Herald, Sat, 30 Oct 1926
Mrs. Huggett Succumbs To Long Illness.
Wife of Bond Memorial Pastor Dies In El Paso Home.
Early Settler

Following an illness that extended over a period of 10 years the last three of which she was confined to her bed, Mrs. W. S. Huggett, 85 years of age, the wife of Rev. W. S. Huggett, of the Bond Memorial Methodist Church, died last night at her home, 2814 Gold street, shortly after 8 o'clock. Mrs. Huggett's condition became critical about three weeks ago and her death was not unexpected. Since that time she had been semi-conscious and unable to speak.
An accident, resulting in a broken hip, which occurred 10 years ago ay Fulton, Mo., while Rev. and Mrs. Huggett were on a visit, left Mrs. Huggett an invalid, as she never completely recovered. At the time of the accident Rev. Huggett was pastor at Lordsburg, N.M.
Came Here In 1897.
Rev. and Mrs. Huggett came to El Paso in 1897 and have always claimed this as their home, although Rev. Huggett has had several ministries in the surrounding territory. Their children were educated in El Paso.

Rev. Huggett has been pastor at the Bond Memorial Methodist church for two years. He was pastor of the Highland Park Methodist church five years. When Rev. Huggett first came to El Paso in 1897 he had charge of the Door of Hope mission on South Oregon street.

Four children were born to Rev. and Mrs. Huggett, but Miss Lillian Huggett, superintendent of El Paso county schools, is the only one surviving. Ira Huggett, formerly an El Paso newspaper man, died in Phoenix in 1917. The other two died in infancy.

Assisted Husband

Mrs. Huggett was a great help to her husband in all his work until the unfortunate accident which left her an invalid. After that she still took a great interest in church work, taking active part in many church societies even during the past three years when these societies would meet at her home.

She held offices in some of these societies at the time of her death. Mrs. Huggett was known as "mother" to many members of Rev. Huggett's congregation.

Mr. and Mrs. Huggett were married in England in 1874 at the famous Lambeth chapel in London. Mrs. Huggett's home was at Lamberhurst, which is in Kent county, 30 miles south of London. The Huggetts celebrated their golden wedding anniversary January 21, 1924. Mrs. Huggett was 85 years of age on January 24, 1926, and was nine years older than her husband.

The Huggett's came to America in 1892, settling in the Pecos valley, near Carlsbad, until 1897, when they came to El Paso. Rev. Huggett became a naturalized citizen of (the) United States in 1897. Mrs. Huggett assumed her husband's new citizenship.

She took an active interest in politics and voted for President Wilson both times he was elected. Two years ago she voted for Miss Lillian Huggett, her daughter, who was elected county superintendent.

Changed Church Membership

Mrs. Huggett was a member of the Methodist church for more than 75 years. In England she was a member of the Wesley Methodist church but changed her membership to the South M. E. upon coming to America. During the 10 years that she was an invalid, Mrs. Huggett read nearly continuously. Her eyesight failed about six months ago.

Rev. Huggett, who is 76 years of age, is still active as the pastor of Bond Memorial church. Dr. W. S. Cummins will occupy his pulpit Sunday morning and there will be no service at Bond Memorial Sunday evening.
The funeral of Mrs. Huggett will be held at Trinity Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. S. E. Allison of Asbury Methodist church will have charge of the funeral services, but will be assisted by other ministers of the city. Burial will be in the Masonic cemetery under direction of Peak-Hagedon.
