Was educated at Elizabeth College 1829-41; College No 285; Wadham College, Oxford; B.A. 1848; Holy Orders 1847; 28 Feb 1847 ordained at Peterborough, Curate at Burbage, Leicestershire 1847; Curate of Badgworth 1848-52; Chaplain at Malines, Belgium 1852 and of Biebrich, Mayence and Zurich 1852-3; Curacies in England 1854-61; Summer Chaplain at Lugano 1858; Vicar of Brixham 1861-81, Vicarage, 1 Castor Lane, Brixham, Devon.

In Memorium note published in the Brixham Western Guardian following AFC's death on May 6th, 1900. It states his second wife was the widow Mrs Caroline Emma Gaches nee Dennis. ( widow of Mr John Gaches and daughter of Mr C. Dennis of Cambridge). They married in 1890 following Mrs Harriet Carey's death on June 3rd, 1886. AFC was buried on May 9th. The funeral cortege was a mile long.

Nearby to the grave of Adolphus is a communal grave of his mother in law, Harriet Brenton and his own wife Harriet. The inscription on the grave reads as follows:

"In loving memory of Harriet, widow of Vice Admiral Sir Jahleel Brenton Bart KCB, died 9 Jan 1868 aged 74 years. Harriet, daughter of the above, wife of A F Carey, Vicar of this parish, died 8 June 1886 aged 62 years. Sidney Pelham de Burgh Brenton Carey, died 25 July 1870 aged 10 years. Leopold Hunsdon Brenton Carey died at Falmouth, Jamaica, 12 September 1875 aged 17 years. Jahleel Brenton Carey Capt. 98th Regiment died at Karachi 22 Feb 1883 aged 35 years, sons of Reverend A F and Mrs H M Carey".
