Mrs. Harriett Tewell

Mrs. Harriett (Shipley) Tewell, 82, a former resident of Artemas, died Friday morning, Sept. 21, at the home of her son, Lester Tewell, Cumberland, after a brief illness.

She was born at Artemas June 19, 1863, the daughter of Elijah and Nancy Shipley. She was married to William Tewell who preceded her in death.

Besides the son mentioned, she is survived by six other sons--Irvin, Everett; Frederick, Chaneysville; Marshall, St. Paul, Minn.; Thomas and Sheridan, Cumberland; Earl, Akron, Ohio and three daughters, Mrs. Frank Jay, Mrs. C.M. Karns and Mrs. Sanford Elbin, all of Artemas. Membership was held in the Lebanon Christian Church, Artemas.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Mt. Zion Christian Church, Chaneysville, the Rev. Henry May, pastor of the church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Walter M. Twigg and the Rev. Richard Bready, pastor of the Union Grove Methodist Circuit. Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery under the direction of the Hafer Funeral Home, Cumberland.

Despite bad weather, the vast crowd attending the funeral indicated the esteem with which Mrs. Tewell was regarded throughout the district. Pallbearers were John Morse, Howard Morse, Walter Miller, Shird Miles, Owen Smith and George Conrad.
