US Congressman, Civil War Union Army Officer. After moving to Ohio from New York, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in Ohio, and became a lawyer in Medina County. Representing Medina County, he served Ohio in the State House of Representatives and the State Senate as a member of the Whig "Free-Soiler" Party. In 1859 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Ohio's 14th District, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Cyrus Spink. He was reelected in 1860 and served until 1863. He was not a candidate for reelection in 1862. In 1864, he was commissioned as a Colonel in the Union Volunteer Army and assigned to organize and command the 166th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was ordered to Washington D. C. to perform fatigue duty and build defenses for the nation's capital. The regiment participated in repulsing Confederate General Jubal Early's advance toward Washington after the Battle of Monocacy.
