OBITUARY The death has occurred of Mr. Haunui Tawhiao, of Waahi pa, Huntly West, aged 63. Mr. Tawhiao was born at Kawhia and went to Waahi pa about 53 years ago. LINK WITH PAST. DEATH OF HAUNUI TAWHIAO LAST SURVIVING SON OF MAORI KING The death has occurred of Haunui Tauhiao, who was born at Kawhia 63 years ago. He was the last surviving- son of King Tawhiao, the second Maori King. He was recognised as one of the outstanding- orators of his generation. He was a prominent member of the Katana Church. He was a strong supporter of the 'Labour Party, and only indifferent health prevented his nomination to a scat in the Legislative Council. King Tawhiao, his father, was born in 1855 and became King on the death of Polatau (Te Wherowhero) in 1860, and died in 1894. Haunui was hii? son by the chieftainess Te Aho-rangi. Haunui came in direct line from Hoturoa, commander of the Tainui Canoe of the great migration of 1350. The funeral took place in Ngaruawahia, the Minister of Native Affairs, Hon. H. G. R.
