BIOGRAPHY Hector MacLean, 4th of Coll, was the son of Iain Abrach MacLean, 2nd of Coll, and Jannette MacLean.
He succeeded his elder brother John after his childless death. Hector's first wife was Méve, daughter of Alister Mac-Ian-Chathanaich of Islay, by whom he had one son and two daughters. His second wife was Finguala/Finovola MacAllister, daughter of Godfrey MacAllister of Loup, by whom he had two sons.
Hector MacLean, 4th of Coll, was said to have been one of the most accomplished scholars of his day. He devoted himself much to study, and took great pleasure in poetry, specimens of which in Gaelic and Latin languages are still extant. He was also a man of considerable piety.
Hector died before 25 April 1582 and was succeeded by his eldest son Hector Ruadh.
