The first secured documentary mention took place in 1187 with the mention of Heidolphus de Plettenbrath in a document of the Archbishop of Cologne Philip I of Heinsberg. He was one of the archbishop's followers, who had also become Duke of Westphalia in 1180. Heidolphus de Plettenbrath helped the archbishop to secure his territory from the neighbors, especially the Counts of the Mark.
