About Heinrich Ottenstein

According to "Tales From a Merchant's Life" (1915) written by Ignaz Bing: "Her [Ida Bing Ottenstein's) bereaved husband [Heinrich Ottenstein] was a half-brother of my father-in-law, the teacher Herr [Simon] Ottenstein in Bamberg, in other words, an uncle of my wife's."

That is to say, Ida Bing Ottenstein was the aunt by marriage of Ida Ottenstein Bing, or, in other words, the Bing siblings (Ida and Ignaz) married the Ottenstein uncle and niece (Heinrich and Ida). Put another way, Heinrich Ottenstein was the half-brother of Simon Ottenstein and the father of Ida Ottenstein Bing, thus making Ida Ottenstein Bing the niece of Heinrich Bing.

And Geni cannot parse that relationship!

In "My Family and Friends" (1916, Ignaz Bing wrote about what he perceived (rather optimistically) to be a lack of antisemitism in "liberal" Nuremberg in the latter half of the 19th century. Yet, as he explained, even though he was one of the wealthiest industrialists in the city, his parents were refused the right of citizenship until he personally arranged for their being admitted to the city. He went on to note that, "In 1860 my brother-in-law [Heinrich] Ottenstein, who was married to my favourite sister Ida and who was certainly not without means, had also been refused the right to citizenship, and when he took up residence in Nuremburg it was merely as an occupant who could be expelled at any time."
