About Heinrich T. Schultz
Heinrich and Anna (Foth) Schultz were both born in the Mennonite village of Heinrichsdorf, Russia near Ostrog in the province of Wolhynia. Heinrichsdorf was one of many Mennonite villages located in the Karolswalde, Ostrog region that was settled by the Prussian-Polish Mennonites. They came with their families in 1874 from Heinrichsdorf, Russia via Hamburg, Germany to Liverpool, England. From England they sailed on the SS Corina into New York harbor on September 2, 1874. They continued on their journey to Avon, South Dakota district and started the new town site of Loretta's Settlement, near the present town of Avon, SD. Heinrich farmed here the rest of his life. Heinrich Schultz family was one of the few families that braved the harsh first winter in South Dakota living in nothing more than a sod house.
They were part of the mass Mennonite migration from Russia to parts of the US and Canada in 1874-75. They are resting in the Friedensburg Mennonite Cemetery at Avon, South Dakota. Heinrich was one of 9 children born to Tobias T. Schultz and Anna Ewert. Heinrich's older brother Abraham Schultz, and his younger sister Katharina Schultz Boese also settled in the Avon district, of South Dakota where they farmed and raised their large families and lived in peace. Heinrich passed away with 5 years of landing on US soil at the young age of 34. His oldest son John had the task at the age of only 15 of having to work and look after 6 siblings and his mother and run the farm. A giant task at any age!
Anna never remarried.
Heinrich Schultz siblings were; Susanna, Aganetha, Johann, Anna, Abraham, David, Elisabeth, and Katharina
Info supplied by R. G. (Bob) Dirks, great great grandson on the Schultz side of the family.
