Helen Isabel Bates

Helen Isabel Terra was born on March 3, 1913, at Fresno, Fresno County, California. She was the daughter of Manuel Luize Terra and Anna Silveira. She married (1) Laurence E. Zediker in Fresno County, California, and had 6 children. That marriage ended in divorce after 1941 but before 1945.

Laurence E. Zediker was the son of Sylvia “Babe” Zediker and an unknown father. He was born on January 28, 1913 in California, and died March 1987 in Freedom, Santa Cruz County, California.

Laurence appears on the 1940 US Census for Fresno County, California. He is listed as a 27 year old white male, born in California, with no occupation. He is in the same household as wife Helen Zediker, age 27, and their children Marvin, Nettie, Orville and Patsy.

Helen married (2) Edmond Dale Bates on December 20, 1945, in Hollister, San Benito County, California. Edmond Dale Bates was born July 1899 in Kansas and died prior to Helen’s death. He was the son of Charles Bates and wife Carrie Eagleburger.

Helen worked multiple jobs to support her family. She became a licensed vocational nurse and this became her primary career. Helen died on May 10, 2005, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, Salinas, California, after many years of poor health. She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Fresno, Fresno County, California

OCCUPATION: She was a retired LVN Nurse at the Monterey County Hosp. She married Lawrence Zediker in Fresno, CA and together they had 6 children, Marvin, Nettie, Orville, Pat, Bob and Larry. She married Dale Bates in 1947 and they had one child Gail. Preceded in death by Son- Orville Zediker in 2004 and Sister- Geneva Bell

SURVIVORS: sons Marvin (Maria) Zediker of Herndon, VARobert ‘Bob' Zediker of San Jose, CALarry (Carol) Zediker of Imperial, CA, daughters Nettie Higginbotham of Fresno, CA, Pat Hope of Salinas, Gail Van Den Broeke of Salinas; 2 sisters Florence Weldon of Stockton, CA, June Miller of Orosi, CA. Several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: Saturday May 14, 2005 from 1pm to 5 pm at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA.
