About Helen Bilgrad

Helen BILGRAD Helen was born in Vienna, Austria, on June 27, 1913, and left us on her 94th birthday. As a young bride, she and Edward, her new husband, emigrated to the United States, eventually settling in New Orleans, where they worked hard to build a good life and rear their two children. It was during these early years that Edward and Helen were able to send affidavits to nineteen relatives and friends in Vienna, thereby saving them from the Holocaust. On Edward's death in 1995, Helen moved to Mercer Island to be near her daughter. Helen's great strength of character and her delightful personality brought her many friends during these last 12 years. She lived independently in her own apartment, swam and exercised twice a week, regularly attended Seattle Symphony and Opera, and until recently, turned out her famous Viennese apple strudel for family celebrations. Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Gravitz, her son and his wife, Martin and Dona Bilgrad, three granddaughters, Debbie Gravitz and her husband, Lawrence You, Liz Gravitz, Jessica Bilgrad, and two precious great grandsons, Davis and Nolan You. Helen will be missed by all who knew her and her laughter. A memorial gathering will take place at a later date.
