Daughter of Fawnia Cole and her first husband, Asa Ransom Swift. Asa drowned in NY in 1822, leaving Fawnia with four young children.

Gen. Philetus Swift, Asa's widowed uncle, married Fawnia in 1823 (with the blessing of his previous wife, Sally Deane, who had been ill and died in 1823). Fawnia and Philetus Swift had one daughter, Electra Jane Swift (b. 1825) before he died in 1828.
