Helen Pinckney (8) , was also an active horsewoman and athlete. She used to run wolves with hounds, and when the wolf was brought to bay, she would ride in and club it with a long billards cue butt she carried for the purpose. In 1901 she married a typical English sportsman, John Lawrence (Jack) Scarlett of Gigha Argyllshire, Scotland. Helen's untimely death occurred on August 14, 1902, from diabetes, after little more than a year of marriage.

Death of Mrs. Scarlett
Mrs. Helen Scarlett, wife of J. L. Scarlett and second eldest daughter of Hon. and Mrs. Paul Van Cleve died at the ranch near Melville at 1 o'clock this morning, of diabetes.
Deceased was about 23 years old and had been married about 19 months.
She was widely known through the county and by all acquaintances and admired for her lovable disposition and womanly virtues.
The funeral will take place Saturday with interment on the ranch.
