This photo was discovered by Megan McGowen in the Hopkins Collection at the Cape Town Archives. She wrote in a post on the FB page South African Genealogy (6 Nov 2019): This formidable and almost defiant looking woman is Helena Catharina BESTER (1794-1878), daughter of Barend Jacobus BESTER and Helena Engela DE KLERK. She is a descendant of Anna GROOTHENNING van BENGALE, a slave, her daughter Anna BOK, a freed slave, who married Andreas BESTER, Helena’s great grandfather. Helena Catharina BESTER married Hans Jurgen (Jurie) LOMBARD (1788-1855), and they are my X4 great grandparents. (added by Pat Howe who discovered that Helena was her 3C5R)
