Thietmar records that "Helena from the Greeks" who later married "the king of the Russians Vladimir" had formerly been betrothed to Otto III "but was then denied to him through fraud and cunning"[332]. This betrothal is unlikely or the report of it at best confused. The marriage of Anna of Byzantium, wife of Grand Prince Vladimir, took place in 988 and there is no indication in other sources of her earlier betrothal to Otto. A "Helena" is not known in the Byzantine imperial family at the time Otto III ruled.]
