BIOGRAPHY
Otto Ingebrigtsen Torvik Born: June 12, 1901 IN: Åkerlihaugen Tollåsen, Bolsøy Died: April 8, 1988 (86 years old)
Otto traveled to the USA and studied at Augsburgh College and Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In Norway he was ordained a priest. He went as a missionary, first for the China Mission to East Turkestan.
After approx. 3 years, he had to withdraw from the country when missionary work was impossible. Here he met widow Helene Wiebe, with two young children, who were part of a German refugee colony. They marched in Moscow on their way home after being expelled because of Communists taking over in Soviet Russia.
In 1940 he founded the Norwegian Muhammadan Mission (NMM) and went to India in 1948. Here he was with his wife and the 4 smallest children for 5 years before returning to Norway on vacation.
Later, Otto, Helene and youngest son Sigmund went to India for a new period. During this period, they also operated the Welfare Station for the Commercial Fleet in Calcutta. They had to leave after 3 years due to Helen's disease.
In Norway he became a gentleman, secretary. for NMM.
Otto has written several books: Between Muhammadans, Behind the Himalayas, Among the Muhammadans in India, Helene from Kyrgyzstan, it basically builds on her diaries and memories. For her it was important that it did not come out until after she had died for fear of reprisals to the remaining family in the Soviet Union.
