GEDCOM Note

Notes on Johannes Decker and the early Deckers Added by hd132 on 7 Nov 2007

Johannes Decker, the first Decker name recorded as definitely living in America, was the Father of Petrus Decker. He married Hillitje or Hollica, last name unknown, and came to live on the Tietvort tract near the present city of Port Jervis, together with Hendrick Decker, who married Hannah Tietvort. The Westbroeks had also become relatives of the Deckers by the marriage of a Decker girl to a Westbroek. This is recorded as the marriage of James Westbrook, the anglicized name, to Magdalina Decker in Kingston, N. Y. in 1687. The intermarriage of Westbrooks and Deckers is shown by the entry on the Kingston Church records of the baptism of Anthony Westbrook Apr.17,1692, wherein his parentage is given as Johannes of Albany, and his Mother Magdalena Decker, daughter of Jon. Brverson Decker and Hellitje Jacobs of Kingston. It is evident then that Johannes Decker and his wife Hellitje came from Kingston, and that they had a daughter Magdalena as well as a son Petres. They were descendants of one of the Dutch colonists sent out by the Dutch West India Co. to people the New Netherlands in the 17th Century. The Minisink Valley included both sides of the Delaware from Mongaup, about 9 miles west of Port Jervis, to the Machackemech River confluence.

The first Decker in this country was John De Dekker, Counselor of State under Peter Stuyvestant, New Amsterdam, and one of the persons arranging the terms of the treaty for surrender of the Dutch possessions in America to the English Fleet, Aug. 27, 1674. He was the same Herr de Dekker mentioned by Capt. Martin Kraeger in his "Journal of the Second Esopus War". The Indians attacked

Kingston and Herr de Dekker arrived with stores and reinforcements. (Documentary History of New York).

After the surrender of the Dutch provinces to the English the following year, we are able to trace John de Dekker only by the fact that various records in Deckertown, N. J. show that the family which settled there came from Kingston, where the previous generation settled about 1675, the town then being known as Esopus. It is very probable that John de Dekker remained in Esopus after the British took possession and changed the name to Kingston, as the English did not persecute the Dutch settlers, and encouraged them to farm the land and improve it.

John de Dekker's father is belived to be Abraham de Dekker Jr., who is listed as being the Accountant General of the West India Co. in Amsterdam, Holland in 1652. (Holland Documentary Colonial History of New York, Vol.l, Page 480).

There lived in Esopus one John from Holland. He married Greetjen Hendricks Westcoup in New Amsterdam, March 1664. She was a resident of Esopus and later Kingston. They are said by W. H. Nearpass to have been the progenitors of the Decker family in this country. Was he John de Dekker? Hendrick Decker is claimed to have been one of their sons. He married Antje Quick (Stickney in The History of Deckertown).

There is much more detailed information about this first Decker family in Old Ulster by W. H. Nearpass, in the Minisink Valley Historical Society Library at Port Jervis.
