An Affidavit in the estate file reads:-
"I Bastiaan Marthinus Tromp formely of Trompsburg, now residing at Jagersfontein in the Orange River Colony, make oath and say:- 1...Previous to the declaration of Peace on or about the 1st day of June 1902 I was on commando with General de Wet. On or about the 23rd March 1901 I together with the commando were crossing the Orange River at Zanddrift from the colonial side into the Orange River Colony,. The river being full we had some difficulty in crossing. 2...A certain Hendrik Albertus ROBINSON of Cyferfontein in the district of Bethulie, with whom I was well acquainted was also with us. The horse ridden by Hendrik Albertus ROBINSON would not take to the river, and when in the water would not proceed. Hendrik Albertus ROBINSON dismounted and held the bridle, the horse reared and struck him and he sank in the river and remained under water some time, and on his reappearing, and being near him I offered him my horse, but he appeared to be stunned and not to understand and then disappeared with the stream. I proceeded some distance down the river to render him assistance if he appeared again, but although I waited some considerable time I never saw him again. I am certain he was drowned." Sworn at Jagersfontein this 3rd day of December, 1902____B. Tromp.
