Hendrik Daniël Uys (1962 - 2001)

Brief overview:

Hendrik (39), and his brother-in-law, Johan Christoffel Carl Stapelberg (40), were shot dead on farm Syferbult, on 4th August 2001.

Three men arrived at the farm in a maroon Audi around 18h00 claiming to want to buy cane baskets. Farm workers told them that the cane factory was closed and they left. Randi Samary called their neighbour, Stapelberg, and his brother-in-law, Uys, and they went to the farm to investigate.

The two men in the Audi saw them and tried to escape, but Stapelberg and Uys blocked their way with their vehicle. The men then opened fire and killed both of them.

Another farmer, Charles Uys, arrived but Hendrik and Johan were already dead.

Senior Superintendent Pieter du Plessis said the two assailants could have been wounded.

Police offered a reward of up to R50 000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the men.
