Petrol attendant, Shadrack Kgaole's (41), who worked at a Caltex gas station in Potchefstroom, was putting petrol into a vehicle being driven by Martin Marzouk Berkouk, a 29-year-old Albanian man. Shadrack noticed blood dripping from the boot, blood on the man's hand, and that he was wearing a woman's ring on his finger. He suspected foul play, and delayed Berkouk while he contacted the police.
Police went to the couples farm and found a broken window, a large patch of blood in the house and bloody smear marks. Berkouk was arrested shortly afterwards by WO JA Uys and GJ Visagie in Fochville. He was searched and they found the couple ID books and jewellery in his possession. There was a large pool of blood found in the boot of the Visage's maroon BMW he was driving. He was charged with the murders.
In September 2010, Shadrack Kgaole testified in court. Berkouk was sentenced to life imprisonment, and a further sentence of 15 years for house breaking and four months for unlawful possession of ammunition.
