Protestant gentleman and French lieutenant-general, permanent deputy to the king of churches "of the so-called reformed religion" (or R.P.R.) which meant Protestant at the time. Authorized to leave France at the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, he passed into the service of England and was naturalized English.
