About Henry Abbott

PAHAUTANUI. (from odb own correspondent.) May 26. The funeral of the late Mr Henry Abbott took place on Friday last. The procession started from his late residence in the Small Farms, Pahautauui, at about half-past 10 a.m., and proceeded to the family cemetery, on his late father’s estate, in the Horokiwi Valley. Mr Abbott was highly respected in the district, and, spite of the bad weather which prevailed, over a hundred persons followed his remains to their last resting-place. Mr Parsons, of Wellington, was the undertaker, and the Rev. Mr Blackburn read the burial service. The late Mr Abbott has been a resident in the Small Farms District for the last eighteen years, and has always been esteemed as a hardworking, respectable settler. In fact, he may be held up as an example to show what can be achieved by perseverance and temperate habits. When he first went to the district, his land was covered with dense bush, and now it if one of the best properties in that place. The land is well cleared and divided into fine grassy paddocks, well stocked with cattle, and it has a handsome substantial house erected upon it, surrounded by an orchard and ornamental trees. Mr Abbott’s sudden death is attributed to the effects of an ac cident which occurred about two or three years ago, when his head was injured by the capsizing of his trap on a journey to Wellington. He leaves a wife and young family to mourn his loss. Source: New Zealand Times (30 May 1883, p. 3) https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZTIM18830530.2.22
