First, Henry Berry is noted as having been born in Lancaster Co., VA c. 1635. Source: Various

Henry Berry's first grants were: February 27, 1656 in Lancaste County for 140 acres on the South side of the Accapason Creek, Patent No. 4, page 109 and [undated] Old Rappahannock County for 428 acres on the South East side with Robert Kings land and on the North side with Bunberry's land, and on the West side with Francis Hale's land and on the South by East side of James Keyes land. Some researchers note Henry d. in Rappahannock Co., VA, but others say it was in Essex Co., VA.

William is commonly accepted to have been b. in New Castle, Lancashire, England and to have d in Portsmouth, Rockingham Co., NH. Some researchers note Wm m. Jane Hermins in Portsmouth in 1636.

There is no child of William and Jane named Henry noted in the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire." Note the following:

"Noyes lists other Berry progenitors, living in the same general area, whose children and grandchildren marry some of the same families as William's. These include Ambrose Berry of Saco (later Biddeford) and Cape Porpus, Gyles Berry of York and New Hampshire, James of Boston, John of Greenland, Joseph of Piscataqua and Boston, Thomas (killed in an Indian fight in Falmouth), and another William (b. ca. 1663)."

To son Thomas my Plantation I now live upon lying & being in the forrest in Quantity of Acres one hundred and fifty to him and his heirs for ever also one Mare filley about Eight Months old my daughter Grace to have the first Mare foale that the said Mare filley shall bring & her increase for ever; also to my son Thomas one brown Heifer about 3 years old having a hole in Each eare Cropt in the Left her & her female increase for ever. My will is that the feather bed I now lie Upon with the furniture thereunto belonging (In Case I now die) Remain in my Wifes possession Soe long as she keeps herselfe Single & Unmarried & afterwards to be delivered Unto my Sonn Thomas in Case she marry. Henry Berry came to Virginia, Old Rappahannock County, as a headright for Epaphraditus Lawson, on May 22, 1650. He became a large landowner in the area, married Catharine (?)and had the following children; William, Henry Jr, John and Richard, all mentioned in his will of 1677.

Hawkins, Richard Coleman, Ralph Rowzee, Augustine Smith, Farmer, John Warren (Warring, now spelt Waring), John Pyne (Payne), Robert Payne, Geo. Eaton, John Gillett, John Phillips,John Watson, Phillip Rowsey, John Johnson, George Pley, Henry Berry, William Gray, Henry Tandy, Alex. Newman, Valentine Allen, Cornelius Nowelland Hugh Owen.

"William Berry as the son of our original Va Berry emigrant, Henry Berry, who arrived as a headright in a land patent issued to Epharaditus Lawson, dated May 22, 1650. Thus, Henry arrived, probably from England, and after paying Lawson the land allotted him from the Colony of Virginia to pay for his passage, started out his life a free man. By 1656 he received a land patent for 140 acres, and from then on appears often in the records of old Rappahannock County. He lived ont he south side of the Rappahannock River, in the county of what is now Esex, upon the Occupacia Creek. His wife's name was Ann, perhaps Saunders, but that is unsure, These 2 had the following children;

Henry Berry, immigrant of 1650, to Virginia and would like to exchange data with anyone who is of this family. Henry had 4 sons, Richard, Henry, John and William. He died 1677 in Old Rappanhonock County, Va. the sons and grandsons were in Richmond, King George, Stafford and Essex counties.

Henry Jr. who died in Richmond County, in 1696
William , of whom I have written John Richard Henry Sr. died in 1677, and his wife was alive at the time of his death, for she receives her "wives third" of his estate, in his will:

I will that John Rolt have one heiffer two yeares old.

I will that all my children may have a great care of the keeping of the said Jane Stow soe long as she lives. That my sone Richard may have learning as well as the rest, as witness my hand this 30th of March 1672.

The background for this page is St. Paul's Parish Church, in King George County, where many of the Berrys belonged, married, had their children christened, and are buried in the adjacent cemetery."
