6/24/2014 at 8:55 AM Report The parents of Henry Berry, Sr., are commonly accepted as William Berry and Jane Locke Hermins, but there's a huge inconsistency in the data that seems to preclude this relationship.

First, Henry Berry is noted as having been born in Lancaster Co., VA c. 1635. Source: Various

Henry Berry's first grants were: February 27, 1656 in Lancaste County for 140 acres on the South side of the Accapason Creek, Patent No. 4, page 109 and [undated] Old Rappahannock County for 428 acres on the South East side with Robert Kings land and on the North side with Bunberry's land, and on the West side with Francis Hale's land and on the South by East side of James Keyes land. Patent No. 6, page 616 Source: Berry Family http://familyclan.net/berry_pedigree.htm

Some researchers note Henry d. in Rappahannock Co., VA, but others say it was in Essex Co., VA.

William is commonly accepted to have been b. in New Castle, Lancashire, England and to have d in Portsmouth, Rockingham Co., NH. Some researchers note Wm m. Jane Hermins in Portsmouth in 1636.

There is no child of William and Jane named Henry noted in the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire." Note the following:

  • 1* See, S. Noyes, C.T. Libby, and W.G. Davis, Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, 89-90 (Baltimore, 1988) (hereafter "Noyes"). The listing for BERRY, WILLIAM is as follows: "WILLIAM was at Strawberry Bank bef. 1636; in 1645 his land adj. Turpin and Cummings; of Str. Bk. 10 July 1648, he sold to Anthony Ellins. Land at Sandy Beach was gr. him 31 Jan. 1648, and 40 a. more in 1652, over which his ch. and grch. scattered, undiv. until 1719. Selectman 1646, const. for lower part of Str. Bk. 1650, gr.j. 1650. Samuel Dowse (2) 1 Mar. 1688-9, was evid. one, likelier (7) [Here prob. referring to the 7th entry under the Berry listing, JOHN, b. 1637.]"

"Noyes lists other Berry progenitors, living in the same general area, whose children and grandchildren marry some of the same families as William's. These include Ambrose Berry of Saco (later Biddeford) and Cape Porpus, Gyles Berry of York and New Hampshire, James of Boston, John of Greenland, Joseph of Piscataqua and Boston, Thomas (killed in an Indian fight in Falmouth), and another William (b. ca. 1663)."

"Houston, we have a problem." I'm sorry to be the fly in the ointment, but I much prefer quality over quantity. Does anyone have documentation that can resolve this issue?
