Erie Canal, Rochester, Monroe, NY My great grandfather , Henry, went out one rainy September Sunday morning, as usual, to gather coal that fell from the barges on the Barge (Erie ) Canal. Claw marks were found on the banks of the canal. The coroner concluded that he slipped in the mud and fell in. William, his son, reported the drowning. There are several newspaper articles about this tragedy. I will hunt for them and post them if there is interest.
