About Henry Cardew

Henry Cardew: born 19 June, 1791 at Truro and baptised there 2 September, 1791; educated at Truro Grammar School, and at the Royal Military Academy,823 1805-1808. He was commissioned in the Corps of Royal Engineers as second-lieutenant, 1 October, 1808: employed at Chatham until embarking 31 July, 1809 for service in the Walcheren expedition; re-embarked for England, 7  September: first-lieutenant, 1 August, 1809.  He served at Plymouth and Pendennis, September 1809 – January 1812; embarked at Deptford in the Henry Wellesley, 24 January, and landed at the Cape of Good Hope, 22 August, 1812; in consequence of ill health he embarked at the Cape, 12 February, 1814, and landed from the Lyon at Plymouth, 4 May, 1814: second-captain, 24 February, 1814. He was again employed at Plymouth, 24 August, 1814 – 18 April, 1815; arrived at Dublin, 27 April, and was posted to Duncannon Fort, May 1815 until granted sick leave, 9 November, 1819,741 owing to asthma He was employed at the Establishment for Field Instruction [now Royal School of Military Engineering] at Chatham, 14 April, 1821 – 28 February, 1822; joined at Portsmouth, 2 March, 1822, which he left 25 April, 1823, and arrived at Quebec, 17 June, 1823: promoted captain, 29 July, 1825. He served in Lower Canada at Quebec and at the Island St. Helen, Montreal, until embarking at Quebec, 21 June, 1827; landed at Plymouth, 18 July; and posted to the Northern District at Hull, 24 October, 1827 – 22 October, 1828,741 being then compelled by the severity of his complaint1 to retire into the Royal Invalid Engineers: upon the abolition of that establishment under the warrant of 23 December, 1831, he was placed upon retired full pay. In latter life he resided at Exeter, where he died 2 May, 1841
