Henry Coe was born circa 1555 at Great Maplestead, co. Essex. According to his father's will he was to receive L20 when 21 years of age; and inthe spring of 1576 he received 6 acres of meadow in Boxford, co. Suffolk. A few years later he married and is next found at Thorpe-Morieux, co. Suffolk, a small rural parish about 8 miles north of Boxford, where it seems that he lived at Thorpe Hall, which estate adjoins the churchyard and is a venerable and picturesque mansion built early in the reign of Elizabeth (about 1560); it is still extant in its original form, in excellent preservation, and is occupied by a prosperous farmer. In the Subsidy Rolls of 39 Elix. (1597), Henrie Coe of Thorpe-Morieux was taxed viij shillings on goods valued at lx sh. (Lay susbsidies, Suffolk, pages 182-184) this was the highest assessment in the parish on personal property.

Henry Coe was married about 1588 to Mary. Five Children were christened at Thorpe-Morieux, as appears in the ancient aregisters, still preserved.

Henry Coe served as church-warden at Thorpe-Morieux in 1594 and in several subsequent years to 1611.

His residence at Thorpe-Morieux continued until after 1610, but how much after has not been ascertained; and his is next found with his sons at Boxford, co. Suffolk, (a former place of residence with his mother in his youth), where the registers record his and his wife's burials in the churchyard.

Henry Coe and his wife, Mary (Vincent) Coe died in Boxford, and were buried on January 28, 1630 and October 29, 1631, respectively. Their gravestones were not found in the village cemetery. They may have been buried there or perhaps in Thorpe-Morieux, where they had previously lived. He was born Henry Coo around 1555.

HENRY8 COE , was born probably about 1555 at Great Maplestead, County Essex, England. The early registers of which parish are lost, just prior to his parent's removal to Wissington, County Suffolk, where the registers are extant from 1538 and do not record his baptism. According to his father's will he was to receive ?20 when twenty-one years of age; and in the spring of 1576, Henry Coe acquired of Oliver Dixon and Dorothy his wife (his stepfather and mother), six acres of meadow in Boxford, County Suffolk, with warranty against them and the heirs of Dorothy; consideration ?20. (Suffolk Feet of Fines*, Easter, 18 Eliz.) It seems likely that Henry Coe took this land to represent his patrimony in the will of his father. Later this land came by various transfers into the possession of the Coe family of Boxford, and the following litigation ensued thereon, which supplies interesting details of Henry8 Coe and his parents.

In 1624, John Mason and John Garyth, church wardens of Stoke-Nayland, County Suffolk, complain that on Aug. 15, 1552, Edmond Todd of Groton conveyed to John Payne et als as trustees a tenement called the Guildhall and land opposite the church in Stoke-Nayland and a meadow called Barnard's or Mistress Anne's meadow of two acres in Boxford, for the use of the poor of Stoke-Nayland; also one hedge, vicar of Stoke-Nayland, by will dated Oct. 12, 1536, devised certain lands there for the use of the poor of Stoke-Nayland; also one Grace Daniel of Messing, County Essex, by will dated Dec. 6, 1508, devised that out of lands called Thomas atte Hills her heirs should annually pay 6 sh. 8 d. to the church of Stoke-Nayland. Now one John Payne and one William Cooe, both of Stock, County Essex, gents., have got possession of the said estates and refuse to use the profits therefrom for charitable purposes. John Payne surviving trustee of Todd and long since deceased and ancestor of the defendant John Payne, did in conspiracy for a nominal sum convey Barnard's or Mistress Anne's meadow to one William Cooe long since deceased, grandfather of the defendant William Cooe. Also John Payne the said trustee conveyed the Guildhall to the town but kept to his own use the other lands in Stoke-Nayland, which are now in the possession of his descendant, the defendant John Payne. William Coo of Stock, County Essex, Esq., defendant, answers that on Dec. 15, 3 Elizabeth (1560), Sir Edward Warner, Knt., and Ralph Sheldon were granted by the Crown by letters patent the meadow of about two acres in Boxford called Mistress Agnes meadow, who shortly after conveyed same to one Robert Turner from whom the said meadow came to one Dorothy, wife of Oliver Dixon; who defendant has heard was first the wife of one John Coo of Stoke-Nayland by whom she had with other issue Robert8 Coo and Henry8 Coo, and later she married said Oliver Dixon; and the said Oliver Dixon and Dorothy his wife, on Mar. 6, 18 Elizabeth (1575-6), agreed to convey the said Mistress Agnes meadow and another meadow called Giles Blyndes meadow, by a duly levied fine, to the said Henry8 Coo, then of Stoke-Nayland, sithence of Thorpe, which fine was duly levied in Easter term following in the Common Pleas. By due conveyances in law said meadows later came to Robert8 Coo of Stoke-Nayland, sithence deceased, brother of said Henry8 Coe, and said Robert8 Coe on Sept. 17, 26 Elizabeth (1584), did by sufficient conveyance in law convey same to William Coe, grandfather of this defendant, from whom it descended to his son and heir Thomas Coo, at whose death it came to defendant as son and heir, who has enjoyed the profits therefrom as had his father and grandfather. Defendant claims the above fine to be a bar to any action, and denies the premises were ever called Barnard's meadow; he has no knowledge that Edmund Todd ever owned the premises, and denies that they were conveyed to his grandfather by John Pityne (Suits in Court of Requests, temp. Jas. I, bundle 39). The defendant accurately described the descent of the meadow in question, but failed to state how it passed from Robert Turner to Dorothy inter the wife of Oliver Dixon of Stoke-Nayland and Boxford, apparently not knowing that Turner was her second husband.

Henry 8 Coe evidently lived unmarried with his mother in her later years at Scotland Hall, Stoke-Nayland, until her decease in 1585 and be was her executor and the residuary legatee of her goods, but inherited no lands. A few years later he married, and is next found at Thorpe-Morieux, County Suffolk, a small rural parish about eight miles north of Boxford, where, from a chance reference in the church registers, it seems probable that he lived at Thorpe Hall, which estate adjoins the churchyard and is a venerable and picturesque mansion built early in the reign of Elizabeth (about 1560); it is still extant in its original form, in excellent preservation and is occupied by a prosperous farmer. In the Subsidy Rolls of 39 Eliz. (1597), Henrie8 Coe of Thorpe-Morieux was taxed viij sh. on goods valued at lx sh. (Lay Subsidies, Suffolk, 182-426); this was the highest assessment in the parish on personal property.

Henry8 Coe was a man of standing in the community, serving as church warden at Thorpe-Morieux in 1594 and in several subsequent years to 1611. The registers of this church contain no Coe entries from their beginning in 1588 to 1690, except of the family of Henry8 Coe. During his life the Puritan movement originated in England, steadily increased in influence, and early in the seventeenth century became the dominant element in Essex and Suffolk. From the fact that Henry8 Coe in naming a daughter after his mother Dorothy, had the child christened in the Puritan form of the name, "Godsgift," tends to show his affiliation with that body and the consequent bringing up of his children in their beliefs and practices. His residence at Thorpe-Morieux continued until after 1610, but how much later has not been ascertained; and be is next found with his sons at Boxford, County Suffolk, (a former place of residence with his mother in his youth), where the registers record: "Henrie Coe was buried Januarie 28, 1630"; and "Mary Coe widdow was buried Oct. 20, 1631." No stones mark their graves in the village churchyard,

"Where the rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep."

Henry8 Coe left no will, and no administration of his estate is preserved as the administration records at Bury St. Edmunds are lost for several years about the time of his decease.

He was married September 21, 1587, to Mary Vincent, daughter of Andrew Vincent. Five children were christened at Thorpe-Morieux, as appears by the ancient registers, still preserved. Change Date: 19 FEB 2017 at 12:51:52
