Henry William Cripps was born on 21 May 1815 at Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England. He was the son of Reverend Henry Cripps and Judith Lawrence. He married Julia Lawrence, daughter of Charles Lawrence, on 5 May 1845 at Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England, They were cousins. He died on 14 August 1899 at age 84 at Beech Wood, Henley Road, Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England.

He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1840 entitled to practise as a barrister. He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1842 with a Master of Arts (M.A.) He lived in 1851 at Chelsea, Gloucestershire, England He was a practising recorder in 1852 at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. He was chancellor in 1883 at Diocese of Oxford, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He was a practising chaiman of the Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) at Buckinghamshire, England.
