HENRY de Oilly of Hook Norton, Oxfordshire (-1163). “R. de Oileo” founded Oseney Abbey, Oxfordshire, with the consent of “Editha uxore mea et filiis meis Henrico et Gilleberto”, by undated charter[1808]. “Editha, Roberto de Oilly conjugali copula juncta” donated property to Thame Abbey, for the souls of “Henrici et Gilberti filiorum meorum”, by undated charter witnessed by “Fulco de Oilly, Fulco Luval, Henrico filio Roberti filii Aumari”[1809]. “Henricus de Oleio” donated property to Oseney Abbey, Oxfordshire, with the consent of "Roberto filio regis fratre meo”, for the souls of "…patris mei Roberti de Oleio…fratris mei Gilberti", by undated charter[1810]. "Henricus de Oili" donated land "apud Cestretonam villam" to Eynsham abbey, for the souls of "patris mei et Edid sororis mee", by charter dated to [1152/54], witnessed by "…Nigello de Oili, Widone de Oili…"[1811]. "Henricus de Oili constabularius regis" donated land in Oxfordshire to Eynsham abbey by charter dated to [1154/63][1812]. The Red Book of the Exchequer refers to "in perdono Henrico de Oyli i m" in Yorkshire in [1161/62][1813]. The 1164/65 Pipe Roll records "uxor Henri de Oilli" accounting for land in Oxfordshire, presumably indicating that her husband had recently died[1814].

m as her first husband, MATILDA de Bohun, daughter of HUMPHREY de Bohun & his wife Margaret of Hereford ([1140/43]-). Her parentage is established by a 1263 inquisition which confirms that Humphrey de Bohun, grandfather of Humphrey de Bohun Earl of Hereford at that time, gave Bradenham to his sister Matilda[1815]. A writ dated 7 Mar "47 Hen III", after the death of "John de Plessetis alias de Plascetis earl of Warwick", notes that "Humphrey de Bohun gave the manor [of Bradenham, Buckinghamshire] in free marriage to Henry de Oylly with Maud his sister"[1816]. The 1164/65 Pipe Roll records "uxor Henri de Oilli" accounting for land in Oxfordshire, presumably indicating that her husband had recently died[1817]. She married [secondly Juhel de Mayenne,] and [thirdly] as his second wife, Walter FitzRobert of Little Dunmow, Essex. Her first and [third] marriages are confirmed by a lawsuit recorded in 1194 in which "Matill uxor Walteri fil Robti" sued "Cecilia uxore Rad fil Wigain" over Swereford manor, Oxfordshire, given to her by "Henri de Oilli vir eius…in dote"[1818]. Her possible second marriage is confirmed by the Feet of Fines which records the judgment dated 9 Feb 1196 in a claim by "Henricus de Bohon…pro Adam de Greiuill" against "Matill de Bohon" concerning land "villa de Waleton…villam de Blakemer" and "in villa de Niweton" given to Matilda "in maritagium quondam Iuhellus de Mee---e"[1819]. It is supposed that Matilda was the plaintiff’s aunt, although this is not specifically stated in the document. It is supposed that the name "de Mee---e" indicates Mayenne, but this is not beyond all doubt.

Henry & his wife had [five] children:

a) HENRY de Oilly (-[1232]). A writ dated 7 Mar "47 Hen III", after the death of "John de Plessetis alias de Plascetis earl of Warwick", notes that "Humphrey de Bohun gave the manor [of Bradenham, Buckinghamshire] in free marriage to Henry de Oylly with Maud his sister" and names "a son Henry and two daughters" as their children, adding that "Henry the younger died without heir of himself"[1820]. “Henricus de Oilli filius Henrici de Oilli” confirmed donations to Oseney Abbey, Oxfordshire made by "Robertus avus meus et Editha avia mea et Henricus pater meus", with the consent of “Roberti fratris mei”, by undated charter[1821]. "Henricus constabularius domini regis" confirmed the donation of land "de Mildecumba quam Nigellus de Oili eis donavit" and land "in Oxenfordia de dono Roberto de Oili" and land "de Cestrona…ex dono Henrici de Oili patris mei" to Eynsham abbey, for the souls of "uxoris et liberorum meorum", by charter dated to [1175/97], witnessed by "Widone de Oili…"[1822]. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1194/95], records "Henricus de Oyli" paying "xxii l vi s viii d, xxii milites et iii partem" in Oxfordshire, also paying in Berkshire[1823]. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1196/97], records "Henricus de Oyli" paying "xxxii l, xxxii milites" in Oxfordshire[1824]. The mid-15th century English translation of the cartulary of Oseney records that "Henry Doylly ye soone of Henry Doylly…the Kynges constable" confirmed donations to Oseney abbey, for the health of "Sibille my wiffe and of Moolde my dowghter" and the souls of "…my brother Robert Doylly", by charter dated to [1200][1825]. Bracton notes a claim, dated 1225, by "Henricus de Oilly" against "Willelmum Basset" for "feodum dim. militis…in Hispedena", the plaintiff claiming that it was held by "Matillis de Oylli [%E2%80%A6Briennius filius Comitis…uxor sua]…tempore H. Regis patris Imperatricis" who died without heirs, inherited by "Roberto de Oylli…Henrici de Oylli patri istius Henrici"[1826]. m firstly SIBYLLA, daughter of --- (-after [1200]). The mid-15th century English translation of the cartulary of Oseney records that "Henry Doylly ye soone of Henry Doylly…the Kynges constable" confirmed donations to Oseney abbey, for the health of "Sibille my wiffe and of Moolde my dowghter" and the souls of "…my brother Robert Doylly", by charter dated to [1200][1827]. m secondly MATILDA, daughter of --- (-after 1242). A writ dated 25 Aug "26 Hen III", and subsequent inquisitions, after the death of "Thomas Earl of Warwick" excluded the dower of "Philippa sometime the wife of Henry earl of Warwick and Maud sometime the wife of Henry de Oylly" and listed his lands without naming an heir[1828]. Henry & his first wife had one child:
i) MATILDA de Oilly (-before 1220). The mid-15th century English translation of the cartulary of Oseney records that "Henry Doylly ye soone of Henry Doylly…the Kynges constable" confirmed donations to Oseney abbey, for the health of "Sibille my wiffe and of Moolde my dowghter" and the souls of "…my brother Robert Doylly", by charter dated to [1200][1829]. Bracton records a claim, dated 1220, by "Henricus de Oylly" against "Mauricius de Gaunt" for "terre…in Westona" which was granted to Maurice with "Matillidem uxorem eius que fuit filia ipsius Henrici…ipsa defuncta…sine herede"[1830]. m as his first wife, MAURICE de Gant, son of ROBERT “Juvenis” de Berkeley & his wife Avice de Gand (-1230).

b) ROBERT de Oilly (-before [1200]). “Henricus de Oilli filius Henrici de Oilli” confirmed donations to Oseney Abbey, Oxfordshire made by "Robertus avus meus et Editha avia mea et Henricus pater meus", with the consent of “Roberti fratris mei”, by undated charter[1831]. The mid-15th century English translation of the cartulary of Oseney records that "Robert Doylly ye sone of Henry Doylly" confirmed the donations to Oseney made by "Robert my beele sire and Edithe my beele Dame and Henry my ffadur and Henry my brother", dated to [1185], witnessed by "Henry Doylly my brother"[1832]. The mid-15th century English translation of the cartulary of Oseney records that "Henry Doylly ye soone of Henry Doylly…the Kynges constable" confirmed donations to Oseney abbey, for the health of "Sibille my wiffe and of Moolde my dowghter" and the souls of "…my brother Robert Doylly", by charter dated to [1200][1833].

c) [GUY de Oilly . "Henricus constabularius domini regis" confirmed the donation of land "de Mildecumba quam Nigellus de Oili eis donavit" and land "in Oxenfordia de dono Roberto de Oili" and land "de Cestrona…ex dono Henrici de Oili patris mei" to Eynsham abbey, for the souls of "uxoris et liberorum meorum", by charter dated to [1175/97], witnessed by "Widone de Oili…"[1834].]

d) MARGERY de Oilly (-before 1196). The on-line Corrections and Additions to the Complete Peerage suggest that Margery, first wife of Waleran Earl of Warwick, was the daughter of Henry de Oilly[1835]. According to the Complete Peerage[1836], she was the first wife of Waleran's son, Henry, despite the obvious chronological difficulties of the latter considering her birth date before 1163, when her father died. The former hypothesis appears confirmed by a writ dated 7 Mar "47 Hen III", after the death of "John de Plessetis alias de Plascetis earl of Warwick", which notes that "Humphrey de Bohun gave the manor [of Bradenham, Buckinghamshire] in free marriage to Henry de Oylly with Maud his sister" and names "a son Henry and two daughters" as their children, adding that "from the elder [daughter] issued Thomas earl of Warwick and one Margery"[1837]. Bracton records a claim, dated 1234, by "Walterus filius Symonis" against "Thomam comitem de Warewyc" which records that "Matillis de Boun antecessor ipsius Symonis" was "uxor Henrici de Oylly" by whom she had "filium Henricum de Oylly" who died without heirs but had "sororem Margeriam" who was the mother of "Henricum…comitem de Warewyc et qui fuit pater ipsius Thome"[1838]. m as his first wife, WALERAN Earl of Warwick, son of ROGER Earl of Warwick & his wife Gundred de Warenne of Surrey (-[24 Dec 1203]).

e) daughter . A writ dated 7 Mar "47 Hen III", after the death of "John de Plessetis alias de Plascetis earl of Warwick", notes that "Humphrey de Bohun gave the manor [of Bradenham, Buckinghamshire] in free marriage to Henry de Oylly with Maud his sister" and names "a son Henry and two daughters" as their children, noting that "from the younger sister…came one Walter de Daventre"[1839]. m --- [Daventre], son of ---.
