About Henry Darnall I

Near Essendon Place was an old house called Bird's Place, pulled down in 1833, (fn. 9) which at the beginning of the 17th century belonged to Henry Darnall, who died in 1607. (fn. 10) His wife was Marie daughter of William Tooke (second son of William Tooke, lord of the manor of Essendon), one of a Hertfordshire family of whom several members are buried in Essendon Church

7. HENRY DARNALL, son of JOHN (6), was born c1564 and died 1607, and ma rried MARIA TOOKE, died 7 May 1632 in her 59th year, daughter of WILLIAM a nd MARY (TICHBORNE) TOOKE of Essondon, Wormley and Sanstead.

HENRY owned Bird's Place, Essendon, Herts., was a Councillor at Law, admitted in 1582 to Gray's Inn. He was granted a coat of arms bearing a quartering of the Darnall Family of Thornley, Co. Durham. (See the arms blazoned above.)

HENRY died leaving a will dated 17 Feb 1607, and proved 7 April 160 8. He died in Feb. 1607. His tomb at Essendon depicts HENRY and Marie each kneeling on cushions on each side of the altar, with their sons behind him and their daughters behind her.

Madame Anne Boteler was the widow of Richard Boteler, Esquire. Their tomb is in Watton-at Stone Parish Church, Hertsfordshire, Translation from the Latin: "Here lies the bodies of Richard Boteler of Stapleford in the County of Hertsfordshire, Esquire, who died 5 May 1614, and Anne his wife one of the daughters of John Mynne of Hertingfordbury, Esquire, who died 12 October A.D. 1619".
